Wapello Republican, Wapello, Louisa County, Iowa, 28 June 1898:

Geo. Higgs was born in Virginia about seventy-five years ago and died in Wapello, Iowa, June 28, 1898, of la grippe which had settled upon his lungs. Deceased was a man of religious principles and although it seemed hard for the relatives to part with him, he placed himself upon the arms of faith and was borne away to his heavenly reward with shouts of praise upon his lips for his redeemer. Mr. Higgs was united in marriage to Miss Caroline Huling in Virginia, in 1846, and to this union were born four boys and three girls, all of whom, with the exception of Mrs. Fannie Porter of Atchison, Kan., and Mrs. Rev. Randolph, of Mapleton, Iowa, preceded their parents to the heavenly home. Mrs. Higgs died December 5, 1894. Mr. Higgs was again united in marriage February 14, 1896, to Mrs. Kira Van Sickle, who survives to mourn his death. The burial took place at Fairview, nine miles south of this city, Wednesday afternoon, Rev. George Peck conducting the services.
