Elmer had been a farmer & a railroad telegrapher. He had been a bookkeeper for the First National Bank and then a cashier for the People's State Bank from its organization in 1918, then resigned in 1920 to be an operator and agent for the Missouri Pacific Railroad.

From his obituary: as a representative of the railroad he was always courteous and accommodating; as a citizen he was level headed and progressive; as a neighbor he was kindly and considerate; to his family he was a loving husband and father.
