Henry C. Lyon's last entry in his Diary on Friday Sept. 12th, 1862:
"Got up thoroughly drenched as we had no tent. After breakfast we started. Marched 4 or 5 miles and formed line of battle."
Henry was severely wounded five days later at the Battle of Antietam on Sept 17th, 1862. Henry lingered about 3 weeks and succumbed to his wounds on the train ride home on October 5th, 1862.
His mother Betsey Piatt Lyon founded the organization Henry C. Lyon Post No. 535 in Pulteney, NY.
