Jamie L. "Jim" Old, 96, of Yates Center, Kansas, died Friday, March 27, 2009, in Burlington, Kansas.

He was born Feb. 3, 1913, in Burt, Kansas, to Noah and Mabel (Gordon) Old.

His mother died seven days after his birth. His Aunt Alta (Old) Mulsow and Uncle Oscar Mulsow raised him.

On May 21, 1935, he married Hazel Peek at a Methodist parsonage in Wichita, Kansas. She died Sept. 13, 2008.

Living his entire life in Woodson County, his careers included farming, commercial hay hauling, oil field work and carpentry at Wolf Creek Nuclear Plant. He worked until his vision failed. When he was 16, he was featured in a farm magazine advertising Allis Chalmers tractors.

His hobby was building bird houses. He also built a train and Santa display for downtown Topeka for Christmas in 2003 that won first prize for best decoration.

His interests included coon hunting and his blue tick hounds, walking in the timber, reading, and baseball.

He and his wife had been the grand marshals one year for Yates Center Days.

He is survived by four sons, J.D. and wife, Dana, Oklahoma City, OK, Donald and wife, Sandy, Topeka, KS, Bill and wife, Linda, Yates Center, KS, and Greg and wife, Donna, Newton, KS; two daughters, Phyllis Peterson and husband, John, Topeka, KS, and Cindy Ink and husband, Bryan, Council Grove, KS; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; and a special niece, Claudia Merrill Tierney, of Anchorage, AK.

A sister, Jessie (Old) Merrill; a brother, Gordon Old; a half sister, Dorothy (Old) Snyder; and a step-sister, Vivian Dewey, died earlier.

Funeral services will be at Campbell Funeral Home in Yates Center, Kansas. Interment will be in Yates Center Cemetery.
