Appointed First Lieutenant, 12th U.S. Infantry on September 21, 1861. Breveted Captain in 1864 for gallantry during operations at Weldon Rail Road, Virginia


He fought Nez Perche Indians in Clearwater Fight, Idaho on July 11 and 12, 1877 and was breveted major in 1890 for gallantry against Indians in Idaho and Oregon
