Vera Marie Gerardy was born March 19, 1919, at Clay Center, Kansas, the daughter of Frank and Maude (Richard) Gerardy. She was married Sept. 28, 1940 , to Dean Shepherd at the home of her parents at Clay Center. Dean was born May 20, 1915, at Herington, Kansas, the son of Roy and Jennie (Trager) Shepherd.

Vera graduated from high school at Clay Center and then taught school for one year. She was then able to use a scholarship given for outstanding 4-H work to attend Kansas State College for one year. There she met Dean, who was a senior. Vera taught rural school for two more years before she and Dean married.

Dean graduated from Kansas State College in 1938 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and was employed by Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Company. Dean completed 42 years service with that company before retiring in 1980. During that time they made their home in LaPorte, Indiana; West Allis, Wisconsin; Clinton, Indiana; and Hales Corners, Wisconsin. His last position was Project Manager in the Mining System Division of Allis Chalmers.

Vera was primarily a homemaker and mother who chose to use her talents in the community by engaging in volunteer activities. While they lived in Indiana Vera helped establish a seven-county Area Council of Girl Scouts. In Wisconsin she served on the Board of Directors of the Methodist Manor, the home for the aging, at West Allis, Wisconsin. In that capacity she served on the Executive Board and the Building Committee and also revised and developed the Volunteer Services. She was recognized for giving over 2000 hours volunteer service in the Manors.

Both Vera and Dean were active in many capacities in the school, community, and in the United Methodist Church wherever they lived. Vera was one of the first women in Wisconsin who served as chairman of the Board of Trustees of her local church.

They were the parents of Elinor Marie, Norman Lee, and Kenneth Bruce Shepherd.
