With the exception of two years in Brunswick his life was spent in Rockland. In his younger days he was employed at Mowry & Payson Paint Factory. Later he he engaged in steam boating with the City of Rockland on its first trip and was employed with the steamer Mt. Desert. Coming ashore he engaged in trucking first as an employee of J. Murphy and later for himself. He was also an employee of the Underwood Company for three years.

He was a member of the Rockland Police Dept. from 1918-1924 and had seen long service with the fire department. In 1911 he was Assistant Engineer for the fire department. He had been foreman of the Gen. Berry Hose Company and was acting chief of the Rockland Fire Dept. for a time. He had served as a foreman of the Veteran Fireman's Association and it was largely through his efforts that the old hand tub Gen. Berry was purchased. He was a member of the Eagles, Golden Cross and Owl Club.
