On 26 Mar 1925, Lieut. Col. Charles W. McClure, a widower with one daughter, married Stella Shoemaker, born in Alabama.

Colonel McClure was well-known to the public because he was the leader of the 1919 first vehicle convoy that crossed the United States from the east to the west. Success was not definite; however, the trip was made, and the possibilities of highways was established. Another young military man in the experiment to see if this could be accomplished was Dwight D. Eisenhower. The book is "American Road" by Pete Davies and is still available.

Col. McClure and wife, Stella, lived in San Francisco until his death on 20 Jun 1940. She continued to live there until her death on 31 Aug 1957.
