Ensign F. D. Register, USNR, was designated Aaval Aviator #9806 in November 1941. He earned his Wings of Gold via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program. Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Register was a veteran of aerial combat in the Central and South Pacific, destroying seven Japanese aircraft. He was killed as a member of Composite Squadron Eleven (VC-11) operating from the escort carrier USS Nassau (CVE-16), when his aircraft was shot down while attacking Japanese positions near Holtz Bay on the island of Attu.

LTJG Register was married to the former Miss Ruth Christianson and the son of Francis Donaldson and Katheryn (Orelle) Register.

His body was not returned to his hometown for reburial until 1948.
