Duane L. ''Speedy'' Porter, 44, of Grand Portage died Tuesday, April 7, 1998, at North Shore Hospital in Grand Marais.

He was born July 17, 1953, to Lex and Rose (Hunter) Porter in Cloquet. He was a lifelong resident of Grand Portage, graduated from Cook County High School in 1972, and for the past many years was employed in tribal government. He was especially concerned with children and elders. In his free time he enjoyed high school football, snowmobiling and baseball. He played for the Grand Portage tribal team for many years. He was active in the 1854 Treaty Rights Organization and the Grand Portage Volunteer Fire Department.

Speedy is survived by his wife, Loa Garvin Porter of Black River Falls, Wis.; a special friend, Lynn Spry of Grand Portage; daughters Adrianne and Angela Porter, both of Grand Portage; his mother, Rose (Hunter) Porter of Grand Portage; brothers Darryl ''Buck'' and Joseph Z. Porter, both of Grand Portage; and sisters Vivian Carlson of Eau Claire, Wis., and Rosanne Corocoran of Grand Portage.

A wake will be held at the Porter home until the 11 a.m. funeral Friday, which will be held at the Old Community Center in Grand Portage. Burial in Grand Portage Traditional Cemetery. Arrangements by Cavallin Funeral Home.
