Carroll grew up in the Rogers Cove Community of Upper Crabtree. He and his wife, the former Louise Presnell lived in the old family homeplace and raised their two children, Alpha and Hugh Carroll, III, there. His mother Bertie lived with them until she passed away. Carroll worked at Dayco and raised beef cattle and tobacco on the side. He was a renown banjo picker, noted for the style in which he played, but very modest about his talent.
