Born in Baltimore and raised in Loch Raven Village, he was a 1958 Towson High School graduate. He earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree at the University of Maryland, College Park.
He joined the faculty of Archbishop Curley High School in Northeast Baltimore, where he also taught history and coached football. He later coached at Laurel High School, where his football team won a state championship in 1988.
Mr. Mezzullo was commissioner of the Crofton Athletic Council for many years. He also managed the Pointer Ridge Swim and Racquet Club in Bowie.
He enjoyed Italian cooking and microbrews. He hosted family feasts and catered events.
