RITES SATURDAY FOR GORTON IN RED ROCK
Perry Daily Journal
March 17, 1949

Final rites will be held Saturday at 2:p.m. in the Red Rock Christian Church for John F. Gorton 77, who died at his home in Red Rock early Wednesday morning. Burial will be in Grace Hill cemetery in Perry.

He was born in Andrew County, Missouri on August 19, 1871,
and moved to Harper, Kansas as a small boy. He received his education there and at the age of 38, moved to Guthrie.
Gorton was the first paid fireman in the city of Guthrie,
relatives reported.

In 1904, he moved to Red Rock and there opened the
John Gorton Blacksmith Shop which he owned and operated
for 29 years. Later he went to work for the Santa Fe
Railroad at Red Rock where he was in charge of the mail
and messenger service. He retired in 1945.

Gorton was a member of the Christian Church. He had been
ill two months.

Surviving are his wife: five daughters, Mrs. Guy Stewart of Perry, Mrs. Ottie Webb of Arnett; Mrs. Jack Ebert of
Standford; Mrs. Betty Anson of Wahunga and Mrs. Jack Stevens of Brookfield, Illinois. Two sons, Jack Gorton
of Enid and John Gorton, Jr. of Red Rock; 28 grandchildren,
14 great-grandchildren and a niece, Mrs. Glen Clark of
Ponca City.
