Silas was the son of Joseph Kirkpatrick who settled on Fines Creek in Haywood County about 1790. Silas married Jane Wood and they reared a family of four boys and three girls: Lawson and Leander, both of whom lost their lives in the War Between The States; Milas A. and James Taylor Kirkpatrick, who were Confederate soldiers; Adeline, who married Wilson Teague; Mary who married William S.Terrell; and Sallie, who married Thomas Benton McCracken. All the girls were wives of Confederate soldiers.

Silas and Jane lived in what is now known as the Reeves Cove of the Uppper Crabtree Community, where they had a farm.
