The daughter of Theodore and Lucinda A. "Lucy" (ARNOLD) Kent, Dora was a granddaughter of Revolutionary War soldier Dan Kent of the Green Mountain Boys (later Rev. Dan Kent, the first settled Congregational minister of Benson, Rutland Co., NY) and his first wife, Abigail SYKES. Dora was also a great granddaughter of Elder Cephas and Hannah (SPENCER) Kent. It was in Cephas Kent's Dorset, Bennington Co. tavern that the 1775 Dorset Accords were drawn up. These documents not only defined the participation of what were then referred to as the New Hampshire Grants in the Revolution, their acceptance ultimately led to the formation of the grants into the state of Vermont after the war.

Dora Kent married 1. Warren Ward NICHOLS 3 June, 1856 in Cass Co. They had ten children, of which six survived. They were

1. Eva Antoinette Nichols (1857-1934, married Riley Walter BLOOD, thirteen children) My great great grandmother.

2. Francis W. "Frank" Nichols (1860-1903, married Mary Ellen "Ella" BLOOMER, three children)

3. Lydia Luella Nichols (1862-?, married 1. Ed SKILLMAN, two children, married 2. Melvin SHERMAN, one child)

4. Eudora Adeline Nichols (1864-1871)

5. Lucy Elizabeth Nichols (1866-1942, married 1. Henry Oliver JAQUAYS, nine children, married 2. George J. SMITH)

6. Thomas Edwin Nichols (1868-1869)

7. Lottie Mae Nichols (1870-1942, married 1. Samuel TASE, one child, married 2. James Perry "Perry" CHRISMAN, one child)

8. Cora Ann Nichols (1874-1875)

9. Fred Hays Nichols (1877-1959, married 1. Eva W. GOLDSMITH, 2. Amy GOIT, 3. Anna PETERS BUTTS)

10. Gertia Ann Nichols (1879-1880).

Warren Ward Nichols was drafted into Co. G, 12th Michigan Volunteer Infantry at the age of 31 and served for the last year of the Civil War. He died 21 March, 1880 at the age of 47 of pneumonia. Dora then married 2. John Barton "Bart" REYNOLDS on 3 March, 1881 at Vandalia, Cass Co., MI. Either he died or the two were divorced. (It is interesting to note that her Reynolds marriage is not mentioned in her obituary.) Dora then married 3. Enos M. TWICHELL 24 May, 1890 at Centreville, St. Joseph Co., MI. He died 21 August. 1901 and lies buried in the veteran's section of Prairie River Cemetery in Centreville.

It is probable that Dora has no marker as I had to consult her death certificate in order to find out where she was buried. She died in Three Rivers of gall bladder cancer at the age of 77 years and 6 months.

We know that Dora's mother Lucy (born 1797) died in either Cass or St. Joseph Co., MI before 1870 (and probably before 1867 when death records were mandated to begin in MI.) Dora's father, Theodore (1792-1884) and an elder brother Elijah W. Kent (1817-1902) lie buried in the Kent family plot, Highland Cemetery, Highland Twp., Oakland Co., MI. Her eldest sister, Lucy Ann Kent (1819-1911, married Oliver W. WILCOX, six children) lies in the Ketchum Pioneer Cemetery, Nottawa Twp., St. Joseph Co., as does her brother, George W. Kent (1821-1869, married Mary CONNER, five children). A sister, Susan Adeline Kent (1823-1907, married 1. George CHRISTY, one son dy, 2. Asa Wheeler NELSON, two children), died in Kalkaska Co., MI and lies buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery at Leetsville. Another sister, Mary Antoinette Kent (1831-1895, married Alson SELLECK, three children) emigrated to Steele Co., MN and is buried in the Forest Hill Cemetery at Owatonna. Another brother, Artemus Arnold Kent (married Catherine A. VOGELSANG, two children), died 6 July, 1907 in Denver, CO and lies buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Denver. Her youngest brother, Dan S. Kent (1836-1914, married Elizabeth REAMES, two children) lies in Prairie River Cemetery, Centreville. One of Eudora's other siblings, Horatio Kent (1833-?), is among the missing, having last appeared as a member of his brother Elijah's household in the 1850 USC for Highland Twp., Oakland Co., MI. Another member of this family has recently discovered through a burial in Vermont. Eliza A. Kent died 8 September, 1845 and lies buried in the East Hubbardton Cemetery. However, the soil overburden has come up so much around her headstone that her age at death cannot be read.
