Freeport Root Beer Man Dies
Andrew Nicholas Petro, 101, passed away Tuesday, December 30, 2003, in Jones Creek, Texas.
He was born April 25, 1902, in Corpus Christi, Texas, the son of immigrants. His father, Nicholas Petrovich, came from Russia, and his mother, Theresa Valentino Petro, immigrated from Rimini, Italy.
He was preceded in death by his parents, by his sisters, Irene Turk and Alexandra Mitchell; brothers, Henry Antonelli, Doc Antonelli and Joe Antonelli.
Andrew grew up in Port Lavaca and as a young man worked with his father oystering and fishing. He came to Freeport about 1920. He worked with his half-brother, Henry, and helped build Antonelli's root beer stand, a popular refreshment stand for many years which now stands as an icon near the Freeport Pubic Library. Andrew ventured out on his own in the commercial fishing and shrimping industries. He also worked for Freeport Sulphur Company when it first came to this area and then became captain of a converted sub-chaser used in the exploration of offshore oil. He owned and operated deep-sea fishing party boats for many years and became affectionately known as Captain Andy. He left this outdoor active life and surprised everyone by becoming an agent for American National Insurance Company, from which he retired in 1967. Even after his retirement he remained active and continued to work gardening, fishing and oystering.
Andy is survived by his wife of 72 years, Nora Helen Petro, of Jones Creek; his son, Kenneth Andrew Petro and wife, Conie, of Churchill; his daughter, Linda Petro Spates of Jones Creek; three granddaughters, Regina Davis and husband, Chris, of Jones Creek, Alisa Allison and husband, Larry, of Clute, and Viannah Petro of Austin; and eight great-grandchildren.
