Served in the Civil War, Co. E 18th Regiment, Missouri. s/o Simpson Dewitt and Susannah Simpson. Married Mary Ann Dodson on Jan. 21, 1848, to this union ten Children were born, (1)William, (2)Rudolph Stewart, (3)Harriot Caroline "lina", (4)Sarah Jane, (5)John Franklin, (6)Mary, (7)George Edward, (8)Hannah, (9)Peter, and (10)Lucinda. Peter Dewitt, his half-brother Samuel Cross, and James Hensley came to Texas, Co. from Jefferson Co. Missouri, believed to be in the early 1850s. They helped settled Flatwoods, now called Hartshorn after the 1st Postmaster Hartshorn Cole. Peter and Mary donated the land for the Dewitt Cemetery. Their 5 year old daughter who fell in a kettle of lye soap was the first one lay to rest in Dewitt cemetery. The cemetery became the Antioch/Dewitt cemetery when the Log Church was built across the road, now long gone.
