Mrs. Peter Sheehan of 216 Elm Street has received a letter from her brother, Edward Hammond of San Francisco, stating that he, his family and his aunt are safe. They fled to Oakland when the earthquake struck San Francisco. They suffered much. Mr. Hammond served during the Spanish-American War as a member of the Forty-fourth Separate Company and remained in San Francisco when the war closed. At the present time, Mr. Hammond and his family are making their home in a boat on the beach. (Utica Herald-Dispatch, Utica, N. Y., Friday Evening, April 27, 1906)
