Katherine F. "Grandma" Newton, 87, of Chautauqua Road, Fredonia, died Sunday (May 18, 2008) at Lake Shore Hospital after a brief illness.
Katherine was born in Jamestown, on June 26, 1920, to the late Herbert and Katherine (Orlafska) Field.
Katherine was a hard-working and caring woman. After completing high school, she went into the wartime nurses' training program at WCA Hospital in Jamestown. It was while working at this hospital that she met her future husband of over 50 years, Archie "Bud" Newton Jr. of James-town.She took on many roles throughout her life. She was a nurse, a grape farmer, gardener and business woman. She was an artist, painter and sculptor. She was a loving wife, mother, grand-mother and great-grandmother.
She had an avid love for her animals, always surrounded by numerous pets, farm animals, and whatever wounded or hungry creature that she came across. She had a love for people, especially children, and was always trying to help out whomever was near her, even when she herself was in need of care. No matter what role she served in, she was always a caretaker, which is how she wanted to be remembered.
Her love of gardening, along with her husband's, led to the forming of Glen Acre's Nursery in 1961. She was able to share and pass along this love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always instilled the ethics of hard work, pride and honesty in her family.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Archie E. "Bud" Newton Jr.; and two sisters: Blanche Howard of Jamestown and Carrie Moughmer of California.
She is survived by a sister, Barbara Ross of California; a son, Douglas Newton of Fredonia with her grandchildren Richard (Colleen), Matthew, Holly, Danielle and Heather; and her great-grandchildren Amy, Emma, Joseph and Haylie; a daughter, Patricia (Stephen) Fisher of Syracuse with her grandchildren Nate, Chad and Audrey.
