Brigadier General, United States Army. Recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross. Son of Medal of Honor recipient Major General Charles Frederic Humphrey, Sr. and Juanita DaCosta. As a First Lieutenant in the 12th Infantry Regiment, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross, the United States' second highest military award, for actions on August 16, 1899 against insurgents during the Philippine-American War. His citation reads: "While exposed to heavy enemy fire Lieutenant Humphrey dressed the wounds of three men of his company, and his courage, coolness, and good judgment were an inspiration to his command." Most of his career was spent in training and his students included Dwight Eisenhower, George Patton and Omar Bradley. A strong advocate of better training and equipment, he helped prepare the United States for World War II. He retired in 1940 with nearly 42 years of service. One of his brothers, Evan Harris Humphrey was also a Brigadier General and another brother, Marion Bell Humphrey was a Colonel in the United States Marine Corps.
