WAKARUSA --- Max Perry Garrett, 71, Wakarusa, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, at his home.

Mr. Garrett was a heavy equipment operator and had worked on construction of missile sites in the Midwest. He also operated Trail's Mobile Home Park south of Topeka for years before closing it in 2001. Mr. Garrett served for more than 30 years with Williamsport Township, where he was road foreman. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, earning the Korean Service Medal with three Bronze Service Stars and the United Nations Service Medal.

He was born July 12, 1931, on the family farm near Wakarusa, the son of Noble Glenn and Junia Genieve Perry Garrett. He grew up in Wakarusa and attended Pleasant Valley School.

Mr. Garrett was a member of American Legion Capitol Post No. 1, Operating Engineers Local No. 101 and an honorary life member of T.H.E. Archery Club, all of Topeka. He also volunteered for the city of Wakarusa and Shawnee Center Cemetery.

He married Ruth Kilgore. She preceded him in death. He married Frances "Fran" Longino Wiezorek on June 11, 1974, at Athens, Ga. She survives of the home.

Survivors also include two daughters, Gail Lynn Freeman, Kearney, Mo., and Pamela Jo Young, Creston, Iowa; three stepsons, Robert Eddie Wiezorek, Cummings, Ga., Charles D. Wiezorek, Topeka, and Larry L. Wiezorek, Carbondale; a stepdaughter, Vicki Sahadi, Topeka; two brothers, Frank Nobel Garrett, Wakarusa, and Gerald Dale Garrett, Carbondale; three sisters, Esther Krill and DeLora Amy Blanck, both of Wakarusa, and Elsie June Tucker, Carbondale; seven grandchildren; and one step-grandchild.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Wakarusa Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Shawnee Center Cemetery, Wakarusa, with military honors by American Legion Capitol Post No. 1. Mr. Garrett will lie in state from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Carey Funeral Home in Burlingame, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Max Garrett Memorial, a fund established at Landmark Bank, 6100 S.W. 21st, Topeka, 66615.
