Ida Barber Collins was the daughter of Stillman Barber and Mary Ann Clark Barber (the widow of Robert Pilford Murphy). She was born in the Willow Branch Township near Milmine, Piatt County, Illinois on July 14, 1860. She attended Monticello School for Young Ladies, a boarding school in Alton, IL. She moved to Gonzales, Texas with her family in about 1876. She attended Sam Houston Normal School in Huntsville in the early 1880s. She was a school teacher in Gonzales. At Sam Houston Normal School, she met her husband-to-be, Uriah Collins. They were married at the home of Brandt Badger (husband of her sister, Margaret) in Marble Falls, Texas on February 14, 1889.
