ZIMMERMAN FAMILY

As our new country expanded in the early nineteenth century, so did the horizons of the men who were seeking a new and better life for themselves. One of these was Joseph K. Zimmerman (1816-1892). There were many similarities between the fertile rolling hills of Western Pennsylvania and his ancestorial Germany. So he came from Schuylkill County to settle in what is now Emerickville in Pinecreek Township. He was married to Mary Esther Hess, (1815-1899). In 1845, he bought some land, which he cleared and built sturdy buildings on. This farm was a good place for him and his family. In 1845 his son Joseph Zimmerman was born. The younger Joseph married Hettie Esther Mottern (1844-1900) daughter of Levi and Elizabeth (Buzzard) Mottern. Out of this union nine children were born, Mary Jane (1866-1914), CHARLES (1868-1947), Blanche (1870-1876), Sarah Katherine (1873-1932), William (1875-1876), Daniel (1877 -1959), Liddie (1880-1888), Minnie (1884-1970), Foster (1886-1952).
One of these children was my great-grandmother, Mary Jane Zimmerman Snyder. In 1958 a plot of ground from the Zimmerman farm was given to the church and became known as the Lutheran Cemetery of Emerickville. Daniel Schuckers was the first to be buried there. It is the final resting place of many of the Zimmerman family. Mr. & Mrs. Hess, my 6th generation back grandparents, are buried beside the J. K. Zimmerman grave, Luthern Cemetery.
