Fannie was the daughter of Dr. Thomas Barbour and Sarah Catherine Strother. Her grandfather was the Hon. Philip Pendleton Barbour of Virginia, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

She married Jesse Simeon Gray in 1870 and spent the remainder of her life in Louisville.

She wrote a book called "Day In and Day Out" based on her 1877 Journal. It references people and Louisville events of that year and shows intelligence and rare spirit for a woman of that day.

Fannie and Jesse had four children, two of whom survived to adulthood.
