Funeral Saturday Manager of Early Paper Here Among First Teachers In Local School
Joseph Leigh Campbell, 73, a resident of this valley for 28 years succumbed in a Wenatchee hospital at 10:30 Wednesday morning. Mr. Campbell had suffered with abdominal trouble for two years and found an operation necessary. He died shortly after the operation. In I906 he became manager of one of the first papers in Cashmere which was printed in Wenatchee. He held the office of county clerk of Chelan county for two terms and was city clerk of Cashmere prior to the county job. When a very young man he served his apprenticeship as a blacksmith in his father's shop but the call of the literary world was more enticing. He graduated from Millerville Normal and Lafayette College of Pennsylvania and took a post graduate course in the University of Pennsylvania.

He first taught in schools on the coast and later he taught four years in Everett high then coming to Cashmere also taught at Dryden, Riverside and other schools in the area. He was Mason and a member of the Masonic lodge. Campbell first came Washington in 1897 for his health. In 1905 he married Jeanette Patterson whom two children were born, Alice and Ralph. He is survived by his wife, two children besides his relatives and friends.

Pioneer Held Several Public Offices
Funeral Saturday.
CASHMERE, Feb. 1.- J. L. Campbell, 73, pioneer school superintendent. newspaper man and city clerk here, died last night in a Wenatchee hospital, after a major operation. Campbell came here in 1902, taking over the superintendency of schools. In 1906 he was manager of the first local paper, the Press, which was published by the Wenatchee Republic.

He was city clerk to the first mayor, A. C. Jones, who will be one of the pallbearers at his funeral. Prior to that he served two terms as Chelan county clerk. Among the schools he taught in the state were Everett, Colfax, Dryden and Riverside.

He is survived by his widow and two children, Ralph D. and Alice R. Campbell. Funeral services will be held here Saturday, with burial in the Cashmere cemetery.
