Anna Barbara was born in Illnau, a small village about 10 miles east of Zurich, Switzerland as the fourth child of Hans Ulrich and Verena Bryner. With her brothers Hans Ulrich Jr. and Casper; sister Verena, and parents she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1854. In 1855 she immigrated to Utah with Casper and John Mathis. After arriving in the Utah Valley she and John married in 1856 and settled in Lehi, Utah where their first two children were born. About 1862 the family moved to St. George in Washington County where seven of her children were born. She is the mother of 10 children, 5 of whom lived to adulthood. They are: John Henry, Barbara Ann, Henry George, Lena Albertina, and Wallace Brigham. Anna Barbara died August 1, 1920 at age 90.
