Samuel J. "Sam" Hollis was the second child of Jesse F. Hollis and Artemise Stewart Hollis. He was born in Jefferson County, Republic of Texas on July 31, 1844. He married Nancy Jane Snider in Orange County in 1861. In 1864 he enlisted in the Texas Cavalry, Ragsdale's Battalion, and served during the Civil War. Sam and Nancy had eight children" Thomas H. "Evin", Siamon Samuel "Sime", Sarah A., Lavinia "Vinnie", Manerva E., Jesse J., Mary Jane and James "Jim". After Nancy's death, Sam married Rhoda Avery Wade in 1886 and they had a son named Leo. Sam was an accomplished musician and was well known in the county. He taught most of his sons and grandsons to play as well and they fiddled and picked at many community dances. After being widowed for the second time, Sam finally passed away in Groveton, Texas on April 27, 1926.

There are some errors on Sam's tombstone: It incorrectly has his initials as S.S. when they were S.J. and it lists his year of death as 1925 when other records including the Texas Death Index and Family Bible say 1926.
