Edward Batcheller, Served 25 Years With Interior

Edward F. Batcheller, 73, retired Interior Department attorney, died this morning in Miami, Fla, while visiting a daughter, Mrs. Jack Barry.

During his 25 years of service in the Interior Department, Mr. Batcheller worked in the National Park Service and at one time was an administrator on the Memorial Bridge project.

From 1937 until 1939 he was assigned to St. Louis, also as an attorney for the Park Service, and as an administrator dealing with purchases of parkland there.

Mr. Batcheller also worked in the Reconstruction Finance Corporation.

A native of Rome, N.Y., he came to the District as a boy. For 30 years he and his family lived in Takoma Park, before moving to Laurel, Fla. upon his retirement.

Joining the Army in 1907, Mr. Batcheller served as one of the first male nurses at the Walter Reed Hospital until his discharge in 1910.

Continuing his interest in the hospital, he had recently written a history of the hospital.

Mr. Batcheller was a graduate of Columbus University here. He held masters degrees in patent law and law. He was president of his classes during his student days at Columbus.

A certified public accountant, Mr. Batcheller belonged to the Columbus University alumni association and was once active in area amateur operatic groups.

His wife, the former Miss Emily Lawrence of Bridgeport, Conn. died a year and a half ago.

In addition to Mrs. Barry, he leaves two daughters, Mrs James Battle, sr., of 9328 Washington boulevard, Lanham, Md., and Mrs. John R. Casey, 5847 Four Mile Run drive, Arlington. He is also survived by a son, Edward F. Batcheller, jr. 7499 Little River turnpike, Annandale, and nine grandchildren.

Mr. Batcheller leaves two sisters, Mrs. Blanche Marrow [Morrow] and Mrs. Carol [Carroll] Wilkes, both of Philadelphia, Pa., and a brother Randall Batcheller, of Dallas, Tex.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Fort Myer Chapel. Friends may call there from 9:45 a.m. til 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.
