Martin Lewis was born in Cocke Co. TN in 1812, the son of John Lewis and Milly Canaday. He lived south of Newport near Wilton Springs in the English Mt. area. He married Winnie Allen in the 1830's and began raising his family in the area. The problems caused by the Civil War gave the family the impetus to move to Collin Co. TX, where many of their friends had moved before them. Martin, his family, and about 6-7 other families loaded a flatboat with their belongings, and floated down the French Broad to the Tennesse River, then to the Mississippi, and finally up the Red River, where they bought a wagon in Marshall Texas, and went west to Collin County, settling near Rhea Mills. Martin and his family lived near a number of their former Tennessee neighbors for the rest of their lives. Winnie passed away in 1881. Martin passed away on Oct 19, 1897 at the age of 84. He is buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery on Custer Road, 9 miles west and 2 miles north of McKinney, TX.
