Francis L. Smith, Sr., 85, a former resident of Hartford, died Monday (May 21, 2001) at his home in Orleans, MA. Born, raised and educated in East Hartford, Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College in Hartford.

Mr. Smith was employed in the advertising area of the Fuller Brush Co., where he founded the Fuller Brush Magazine. Editor and chief contributor of the magazine for over 30 years, he held the position of Vice President of Marketing and served on the Board of Directors at the time of his retirement in 1969.

He moved from his long time Hartford home to Orleans, MA, shortly after his retirement. He owned and operated a small shop in Orleans, MA, called the Village Smith prior to working for several years at the Orleans Furniture Store.

Mr. Smith had been a member of St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hartford and later became very active with St. Joan of Arc Parish. He had volunteered for many years at bingo nights and was active in fundraising for the present church building and had served as a Eucharistic minister, lector and usher.

He was predeceased by his son, Mark A. Smith, and his granddaughter, Liza Noel Smith. He is survived by his wife; his sons; his daughters,; his brother; 23 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Joan of Arc Church, 61 Canal Rd., Orleans, MA, TODAY at 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow at the Orleans Cemetery, Tonset Rd., Orleans, MA. Memorial donations in his memory can be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cape Cod, 923 Rt. 6A Yarmouthport, MA or St. Joan of Arc Church, PO Box 336, Orleans, MA.
