Funeral Honors L. Manwaring.

More than 600 attended the funeral services for LaVell Manwaring, 69, of Naples, held Monday at 11 a.m. in the Naples LDS Ward Chapel.

Mr. Manwaring was found dead in his truck Thursday evening of last week about 19 miles north of Vernal on the Vernal-Manila highway. He had been on Brush Creek Mountain hauling logs for an LDS Church project.

About 9:30 as he failed to arrive home Utah Highway Patrol was contacted and Trooper Ronald Wilson went along the hishway to check.

At Barker Springs he noticed a sign knocked out on the east side of the highway and when he looked over the embankment he spotted a pickup truck in the gully.

Trooper Wilson found Mr. Manwaring's body and called for assistance and an ambulance. Evidence of severe injuries to his legs and skull fracture was reported.

Trooper Wilson said that apparently the brakes on the truck had failed and it had been airborne 85 feet before plunging into the opposite wall of the canyon that was 150 feet deep in places. The truck cab was crushed from the force of the impact in front and the timbers in back.

Other workers on the project said they had noticed the truck traveling rather fast and later found some of the timbers on the road. After returning to Vernal and finding that Mr. Manwaring had not arrived they notified the Highway Patrol.

Prayer at the mortuary was offered by Elmer Manwaring, a brother of the deceased. Lowe Goodrich played a violin prelude and postlude music for the services.

Invocation was by Patriarch Byron Goodrich following the opening sond, "Prayer is the Soul's Sincere Desire, " sung by a double mixed quartet composed of Norda Cook, Dixie Holmes, Relta Ruppe, Frances Merrell, Linus Openshaw, Lowe Birchell and Verdin Goodrich, accompanied by Oris Pope.

Dallas Merrell, member of the bishopric, read the obituary, followed by remarks and expressions of appreciation by Bishop Orlo Goodrich, who also conducted the service.

A vocal solo was sung by Darlene Evans, accompanied by Carolyn Goodrich, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." President J. Ross Merrell was the concluding speaker. The closing song was "Abide With Me," sung by the double mixed quartet and Asael Haws gave the benediction. Dedication of the grave was by Ashel J. Evans.

Pallbearers were Kristin, Terry and Don Wilson, Boyd Workman, Fen and Randy Simmons, all grandsons.

Enoch LaVell Manwaring was born October 16, 1894 at Vernal, a son of David and Marion Atwood Manwaring.

He attended school in Naples and the old Uintah Academy where he was active in sports. He especially enjoyed playing basketball. He was playing on the Naples basketball team when it took the championship in 1912.

As ward chorister he also sang in a quartet for many funerals.

As a young man he was employed at the gilsonite mines.

He married Ivy Lena Gardiner, June 8, 1917, in the Salt Lake Temple. After the marriage they lived at Little Brush Creek ranch. He purchased his present farm and moved to Naples in 1924.

Church positions included being a counselor to Bishop Byron Goodrich for ten years and then bishop of the ward for another ten years. He was later chosen as high councilman and served four years.

It was while he was serving as president of the high priest quorum of Uintah Stake that he was called to the Tongan Mission as a labor missionary. Together with his wife the couple spent two and a half years in this mission.

While in Tonga he was chosen presient of the Liahona Branch and for the duration of his mission he held this position.

Soon after returning from Tonga he was made stake mission president. Then he was called to the Hawaiian Islands on a service mission to help with the building of the Polynesian Culture Center.

Besides helping on several chapels and the Uintah Stake Center in Vernal, he has helped on and donated to chapels in Moses Lake, Washington, Rifle, Colorado, Springville and Orem, Utah.
