He was married to Roxanna Drew (1831-1901). They had 5 children: Emily, Robert, James, Florence, and Louis.

James was known for his involvement with the early circus in Putnam County. He, and his circus partners had the first elephant ever conceived and born while the parents were held captive by man. "Mandrin," the father, and "Hebe," the mother, of the now famous baby were imported into America in 1871 by James E. Kelly, who sent Elbert Howes to Ceylon, where they were obtained. Both were excellent performing elephants. The birth took place at Messrs. Cooper & Bailey's winter quarters, March 10, 1880.
