My sister, Ellen Kam Chee Chun, was born in Honolulu. She was not quite sixteen years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed. All the boys were encouraged to join the military. Two of our brothers, Charlie and Nick, served during World War II. Ellen was asked to leave school and go to work. She went to Pearl Harbor and worked at Fort Island as a secretary. She came back with horrible stories that she could see submarines with dead sailors. Though this was after the bombing it took quite some time to clean up so she witnessed it.
She married Lewis Brightwell and settled in Missouri.
In 1963 they had a baby girl. Unfortunately, Ellen did not survive the birth.
Ellen, I still think of you often and hope your baby, now grown, has a good life.
