---Marvin E. Becker, an award-winning pioneer film maker, died Sunday at Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco after a long illness at age 77.
---Mr. Becker was an innovator in the use of 16mm film in industrial, documentary, commercial and educational movies.
---A native of Great Bend, Kan., Mr. Becker moved to the Bay Area in 1937 on an assignment to document the construction of the 1939 World Fair on Treasure Island.
---During World War II, Mr. Becker was a captain with the 254th Marine Reconnaissance Squadron, mapping the coast of Okinawa and China.
---He was hired to produce the official films for the 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley and did industrial films for Bechtel Corp., Del Monte Corp., Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Stanford University and all the U.S. television networks, as well as the BBC in England and the CBC in Canada.
---During the 1950s and 1960s, Mr. Becker wrote a photographic column for the San Francisco News and hosted a series of shows on photography for KQED-TV.
---In 1980, he was presented the First Annual Pioneers Award by the Industrial Film Producers of America.
---He is survived by his wife, Ann, and a son, Carlisle, both of San Francisco; a daughter, Kathleen Roose, of Fortine, Mont.; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
