Born in Cliffside on June 18, 1912, she was a daughter of the late Zeno and Margaret Davis Hawkins. She attended Gardner-Webb Junior College and graduated from Meredith College in 1933. She was an outstanding athlete and basketball player. Her first job was teaching at Harris School and coaching girls' basketball. She was a public school teacher for 35 years and had a love for teaching. She was a member of Cliffside Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 64 years, Solon David Smart; sisters and brothers-in-law, Meredith and Howard Hawkins, Elizabeth and Robert Condrey and Lila and Henry Hodge; brothers and sister-in-law, Robert "Tubby" and Georgia Hawkins and Alfred "Buck" Hawkins; baby Ralph Hawkins; nephew, Henry "Big Shot" Hawkins; and niece, Karen Beason.
She is survived by two daughters, Cathy S. Butler and husband, Ron, of Asheville and Patti S. Hayes and husband, Doug, of Cliffside; grandchildren, Melissa Reed and husband, Tony and Blake Butler and wife, Spencer, all of Asheville, Tara Owens and husband, Joey, of Cliffside, and Trent Hayes and wife, Jeanette, of Taylors, S.C.; sisters-in-law, Laverne "Bud" Hawkins, Virginia Smart Taylor and Ruby Smart; and many nephews and nieces.
She is also survived by the pride of her life, her great-grandchildren. Her happiest hours were spent with them: Jacob, Britney, Sydney, Joshua and Cynthia.
