During the Civil War, he enlisted on 10 Sept 1862 to serve for 9 months, and was commissioned on the 19th as a 1st Lieut in Company D, 27th Maine Volunteer Infantry. He resigned from his position on 4 Feb 1863, and returned home to Lebanon, Maine. He lived his life here in town, where he was a farmer.

By his first wife Abbie, he had two children, Walter Herbert and Hattie Eldora.
