John Mahoney emigrated from County Cork Ireland in 1835. He married Ellen Mahoney in upstate New York. Their large family is mentioned in the "History of the Counties of Woodbury and Plymouth" by W.L. Clark and the "History of Danbury, Iowa 1865-1965" by V. Dimig.

Accounts vary slightly, but records suggest the following:
- John Mahoney and Ellen Mahoney married in Fort Covington, Franklin County NY on February 4th 1845 [per the Roman Catholic parish records of St. Patricks Church, Hogansburg, Franklin County NY].
- John and Ellen had at least 13 children [perhaps 15], and several of their older children were baptized at St. Patrick's Church, Hogansburg NY.
- following their 1845 marriage, they farmed in Fort Covington township, Franklin County NY prior to relocating to Iowa [this township borders Quebec Province, Canada; Fort Covington village was 1 mile south of the Canada/USA border, a border which is atypically located south of the St. Lawrence River in that region]
- one historical account mentions the family joined a wagon train for their challenging 1,000 mile journey to Iowa
- in Iowa, by 1860 they had settled in Iowa township, Dubuque County IA near Tivoli [arriving about 1852-1860, but the latter date seems more likely based on the birth locations of their children and census records]
- the family later relocated to western Iowa, moving to an area named "Cork Hill" near Oto, Woodbury County IA joining friends who had settled there [arrival date between 1863 and 1867] ***
- John purchased land in Woodbury County IA and eventually had a fine farm of over 260 acres with a log cabin home for his family
- the John and Ellen Mahoney family was a pioneer Woodbury County farm family; they were active members of Oto St. Mary's Church, and beloved by many in the Oto, Anthon, and Danbury communities.

John and Ellen were parents of:
- Mary Mahoney (Mrs. Patrick Kennedy, d. 1918 Danbury IA)
- Elizabeth Mahoney (Mrs. Charles Callahan, d. 1937 Danbury IA)
- Catherine Mahoney
- Lucy Honora (dressmaker and sewing teacher, d. 1927 Danbury IA)
- Martin J Mahoney [d. 1914 Anthon IA (m. Bridget Madden)]
- Ellen Mahoney
- John Mahoney
- Daniel Mahoney
- William Mahoney [d. 1953 Anthon IA (m. Catherine Madden)]
- David Mahoney [resided 1937 Anthon IA]
- Margaret Mahoney (Mrs. John W. Collins, d. 1890 Oto IA)
- Michael F Mahoney
- Jenni Alice (Mrs. John Holden)
- James A Mahoney
- Infant Mahoney (d. 1871 Oto IA)
