George J. Staab Jr., 87, of Springfield died Saturday, Dec. 31, 2005, at his home.

He was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Springfield, the son of George J. and Christine Ize Staab.

Mr. Staab was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in grave registration. He received the Purple Heart Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three bronze battle stars, two overseas service bars, a service stripe, Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantryman Badge.

He retired as a partner from Staab Funeral Home after more than 60 years. He was an Illinois Funeral Directors Association licensee for more than 50 years and a member of National Funeral Directors of America.

He was a member of Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Knights of Columbus Council 364, VFW Post 755, Catholic War Veterans of America and Royal Arcanum and a life member of American Legion Post 32, Disabled American Veterans Hall Hagler Chapter and AMVETS. He formerly served as president of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart Church. He was a director at the former Capitol Bank.

Survivors: sister, Catherine L. Staab of Springfield, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral Mass: Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. Burial: Oak Ridge Cemetery.
