BLACKSBURG - Fay "Doc" Smith, 79, of 804 Cherokee Street, died Monday in the Cherokee County Memorial Hospital. Native of Union County; son of the late J.J. and Minnie Hewitt Smith; retired textile employee; member of the Eastside Baptist Church. Surviving: sons, James Otis and Leon Smith, both of Blacksburg; daughters, Mrs. Joe Sanders of Charleston, Mrs. Edward Ferdinand of Brentwood, New York; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held at 4 P.M. Wednesday at the Eastside Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. M.P. Hampton and Timothy Cochran; burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery. Pallbearers: Carl Ledford, Brandy Benton, Joe Hicks Whitner Jr., Tony Moss, J.C. Smith and Buddy Wayne Owens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 P.M. tonight at the Gordon's Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30 Wednesday.
