Deceased Name: Mercedes Jewell Young

COLORADO-Graveside services for Mercedes "D'Des" Jewell Young, 92, will be in January at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.

Mrs. Young, a native of Loreauville and a resident of Coronado, CA., died Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, after a courageous battle with meningitis.

Her final resting place will be alongside her late husband, Rear Admiral Howard L. Young.She was born Oct. 9, 1909, to Harry B. Jewell and Amelie Cecile Neuville. Mercedes was the youngest of twelve children and grew up in New Iberia, graduating from New Iberia Senior High with the class of 1927 and attending LSU in Baton Rouge. She was the granddaughter of the late Dr. Frank Jewell, MD of New Iberia and has many nieces and nephews throughout Louisiana.

Mercedes first made her home in Coronado in 1936 as a new Navy wife. She is remembered for her unbounded love for her family, strong traditional values, extraordinary strength of character and her steadfast independence.

She cherished the shared experiences that tightly bonded the community during World War II, when she, along with many of her friends, endured lengthy separation from, and sometimes the loss of, husbands while raising their families here.

Mrs. Young is survived by two sons, Howard L. Young Jr. of San Diego and William P. Young of Grants Pass, Ore.; a daughter, Annie Hunt of Coronado; eight grandchildren, Gregory Leyland Hunt, William M. Hunt, Laurie Hunt Puglia, Amy T. Young, Tim H. Young, Lisa Young, Mark Young and Amber Young; and two great-grandchildren, Sai Puglia and Trey Young.
