John C. Pierce, 78, of Sioux City died at his home Tuesday morning, November 20, 1973, after a long illness. Funeral services were held November 23 at the W. Harry Christy Morningside Funeral Home. Merrill Bean of Jehovah's Witnesses officiated. Interment was in the Oto Cemetery. Casketbearers were nephews, Arthur and Clifford Coon, Ray and Harold Beeson, Vern and Cecil Griffith.
John was born November 29, 1894, at Danbury, Iowa, to Absolum and Mary O'Brien Pierce. He lived his childhood in the Anthon and Danbury communities and all his life in Woodbury County. September 23, 1914, he married Jennie V. Coon in Sioux City. They farmed in and around the Anthon-Oto communities for several years before moving into Oto, where he engaged in the trucking business. In 1933 he became bridge foreman for Woodbury County and continued until 1942. He worked at the Sioux City Air Base until 1943, when they moved to Sioux City, where he became employed by the State Highway Commission. After seventeen years he retired.
John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and six sisters. He is survived by his widow; a son, John Earl of Oto; and a daughter, Mrs. Clifton (Wanda) Weber of Cushing, three grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
