Duane William Carrier was the son of Philo Hale and Mary (Williams) Carrier. Elizabeth (Haviland) Carrier was his 1st wife. Elizabeth died February 1888. Eugenia Adelaide (Tifft) Martin Carrier was his 2nd wife. They were married Buffalo, New York January 6, 1893. They were divorced before June 5, 1900. Eugenia died in 1922. John Martin was her 1st husband. They were married January 21, 1866. John died December 18, 1884. Duane served during the Civil War.

Duane enlisted into the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry in Albany, New York on 19 August 1861. He was mustered into Co. A. as a private for a three year term on 30 August 1861. However, was discharged due to disability on 4 October 1861. This regiment was also known as "Ellsworth Avengers." This unit was comprised of men from all over the state of New York. Specific requirements had to be met before one was even considered, such as each had to be 5' 9" tall, single and of good moral character.
