He came from Amityville, New York, the same village as fellow 77th Infantry Division comrade and Distinguished Service Cross recipient Alfred E. Griffiths. He (Watson) survived several close calls in battle and, at one point, had pack blown off him but escaped unharmed. Unfortunately, he was killed in action in the Argonne Forest on October 12, 1918. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.
