John was born in Cocke Co. to Peter Fine and Rebecca Holiday Statts Fine. He married Nancy Jennings Lee 10//1800 in Cocke Co. and they had ten children: Mary Polly, Elizabeth Ann, Sarah, Peter Lee, Mahala, Nancy E., Abraham B., Minerva Caroline, John M. and Martha Louise. John, three of his daughters and a son-in-law Jabin Snow Taylor are thought to have died of a very contagious pneumonia outbreak all in early 1857. Possibly, his wife Nancy died from its lingering effects since she was bed fast for two years before her death. Peter's letter of 01/26/1858 to his sister, Elizabeth Hill states: "I was in Tenn. last fall and the appearance of the old house is truly a sad one. Mother Nancy and Martha are the occupants with 5 graves in the orchard together with Mother's bad health…". John was a veteran of the war of 1812. His son Peter died of mortal wounds received at the Battle of Wilson creek near Springfield, MO serving as a lieutenant in the Confererate army. Peter's wife and daughter cared for his wounds in his Dade Co., MO home for a month before his death. Son John M. died at sea.
