American Western Artist. Educated at St. Johnsbury Academy in Lyndon, Vermont. He worked as a teenager doing ornamental decorating of scales. He sailed to San Franciso searching for gold. He panned for gold in the Salmon River area and made sketches. He served in the Civil War for a short time. He then returned to San Francisco and opened a studio and began showing his art locally. He made trips to Europe to study art in Munich and at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1879 he moved to Colorado where he sketched throughout the West. He used oil and watercolor for his mining scenes and his landscapes often were of the Rocky Mountains.

In the bio, it is indicating that Saint Johnsbury Academy is located in Lyndon, VT..... The Academy is and always has been located in Saint Johnsbury, VT. The Academy was founded in 1648 by the Fairbanks family.... the same Fairbanks of Fairbanks Scales where Harvey Otis Young was employed as indicated in his bio.
