Lewis Browne, son of John Allen Browne and Patsy Hobbs Browne was born in 1827, possibly in Cumberland Co. NC. His brother Judge Newburne, was born in 1824, and has Cumberland Co. NC. listed as his birthplace.
Lewis moved with his family to Tuscaloosa Co. AL in 1834 and married Elizabeth Amanda Jones in Tuscaloosa in 1855. Lewis served as a captain in the Confederacy during the Civil War and was in the home guard as well.
Lewis and his family farmed about 4 miles east of Tuscaloosa, which has grown out to encompass his area. He was a slave owner and had a plantation. Lewis caught pneumonia and died 2 weeks after his brother Judge Newburne Browne. He is buried in the north side of the Hopewell Baptist Church cemetery in the eastern part of Tuscaloosa on University St. behind the church. There are a number of family members buried around his stone.
