Sister Joseph John McDonald Provided Foster Care for More Than 120 Children.

In the early 1950s when she was a parish organist in the town where she was teaching, Teresa McDonald approached the parish priest and told him of her long desire to become a religious. His first words to her were that she should become a Sister of St. Joseph and he set up an interview for her with one of the Sisters.

After the interview, she knew she wanted to be a Sister of St. Joseph. In January, 1954, she entered the Sisters of St. Joseph from St. Augustine Parish in Austin, Pennsylvania and was given the name Sister Joseph John. She professed her final vows on August 15, 1959 and celebrated fifty years as a Sister of St. Joseph in 2003.

Sister Joseph John spent more than 20 years providing foster care through Catholic Social Services. She had fostered more than 120 children during this ministry. Numerous children, many now grown, and their families remained in contact with Sister Joseph John and continued to visit with her at the Villa Maria Community Living Center where she resided. Gatherings also were held to bring together many of the children and their families as a group to visit with Sister Joseph John. They were very joyous occasions at the Living Center.

From 1972-1979, Sister Joseph John served as Superior of Villa Maria Convent. Most of her ministry work prior to that was in teaching. She taught at Villa Maria Elementary School, Erie, Harborcreek School for Boys, Harborcreek, Villa Maria College, Erie, and Notre Dame School, Sharon, Pennsylvania where she also served as principal. She served at the Villa Maria Conservatory, Erie, and spent thirteen years as a piano teacher at Villa Maria Conservatory and St. Francis Convent in Clearfield, Pennsylvania.

In 1943 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Public School Music from Mansfield State Teachers College in Mansfield, Pennsylvania. She earned a Master of Arts in Public School Music from Chicago Music College, Chicago, Illinois.

She graduated from Union High School and George F. Johnson Elementary School in Endicott, New York.
