(June 03, 1827 ~ October 04, 1907)

A Pioneer Resident Gone

Funeral of Smith Akes Will Be Held Sunday Afternoon at 3 O’clock From Home of His Son.

Smith Akes
, father of Band Director W. A. Akes and Al Akes, passed away at 5:45 o’clock Friday evening at the home of the latter, corner of Sixth street and Chicago avenue. Though his loss is mourned by many his death was not unexpected because he had been in a precarious condition for several weeks, his right side being paralyzed.

There is, perhaps, no man in the mining district who possesses a larger number of friends and acquaintances than did Mr. Akes. He came to this place before the city was started and at that time the now city of Joplin was a settlement of small tents.

Deceased was born near Germantown, Ky., June 3, 1827 and was, at the time of his death, eighty years of age. The funeral services will be held at the home of Al Akes, Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock and will be under the auspices of the Galena Firemen’s band. The burial will be in Galena cemetery.
