Though he was born on a plantation in Camden Co., NC, the family moved to Norfolk, Va. in 1858, and during the Civil War, they lived in both Norfolk, and Oxford, NC. He graduated from the University of Maryland as a medical doctor, and later joined the Navy from which he retired in 1904.
