Roman Emperor. He born in 137 AD and was bought up in the household of Domitia Lucilla, mother of Marcus Aurelius, and after a number of minor postings, was made commander of the 22nd legion, "Primigenia" in Germany in 172 AD. He served as consul in 175 AD and was also governor of Lower Germany and Africa. After the murder of the Emperor Pertinax in 193 AD he won power by being the highest bidder at an auction for the position of Emperor organised by the Praetorian Guard. He was unpopular with the senate and people of Rome, and soon lost the support of the Praetorians as well when he failed to honour his promises to reward them. Three rivals for power soon emerged in the provinces, with Lucius Septimus Severus winning most support and marching on Rome. He tried to fortify Rome against the coming attack, and sent assassins in an unsuccessful attempt to kill Severus. He finally asked the senate to make Severus his co ruler, but Severus was by now too powerful and had him sentenced to death in June 193 AD. He was executed "amid a shameful scene of tears", and his body was given to his wife and daughter and buried in his great-grandfather's tomb.
